Must-Do Activities in Ella

From the summit, you'll enjoy breathtaking views over a wide valley and the Kirindi Oya River. It's perfect for photos and a moment of rest. On your way down, visit a Batik workshop in the village below.
• Ella Rock: Following Little Adam's Peak, continue your mountain hikes with Ella Rock. This time, the trek takes 4 hours to reach the ridge. Other Sights Around Ella

If the mood strikes, visit the Dhowa Temple. This ancient stone structure dates back roughly 2000 years and stands on the road between Badulla and Bandarawela. Inside, a 12-metre-tall Buddha statue is carved—but left unfinished—into the rock. Continuing the Buddhist theme, head to the Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery, a centre for meditation learning and practice.

Climate: When to Visit?

Ella's temperatures typically range between 20°C and 28°C. Nestled in mountainous terrain, the town enjoys a cooler climate than lower-altitude zones—less cold than Nuwara Eliya, less hot than the capital. These mild temperatures are perfect for enjoying the full range of attractions. With a savanna climate and dry winters, the region sees heavy rainfall, especially in summer. The recommended months to visit are January, February, March and July. That said, the region is worth visiting year-round. Your choice will depend mainly on your tolerance for heavy rain (as in November) or excessive heat (as in May).

Ella's town centre offers few attractions. Generally, tourists prefer exploring the surroundings. To reach these distant sites, you have several options. Little Adam's Peak and the Nine Arches Bridge are easily reached on foot, though the round trip typically takes 3 to 4 hours. The trek can be tiring for some given the intense sun in this part of Sri Lanka. Renting a bicycle speeds things up—rental shops operate in town. If your budget allows, a tuk-tuk offers comfort and speed. You can hire one for the full day to hop between sites.

Numerous options exist for reaching Ella. The most popular routes start from the major cities of Colombo and Kandy. This sought-after destination sits on the Colombo-Badulla railway line and the A16 highway (Beragala-Hali Ela), at an altitude of 1041 metres.

From Colombo

From the capital, the road distance eastward exceeds 200 kilometres. Three options are available:

• Bus: Buses heading to Dambulla depart from Colombo's main bus station. En route, you disembark at the Kumbalwela junction (roughly 10 km from Bandarawela). From there, take a bus or tuk-tuk 5 kilometres further to Ella.
• Train: A direct train departs Colombo Fort Station for Ella.
• Taxi: The priciest option, but you can hire one for a direct journey.

From Kandy

From this historic city, you'll cover about 135 kilometres. Transport options include:

• Bus: Many direct buses connect Kandy and Katharagama, stopping in Ella along the way. Alternatively, catch a bus from Kandy to Badulla or Bandarawela, then transfer to an Ella-bound service.
• Train: The Kandy-to-Ella train journey is unmissable for globe-trotters. That said, travel outside peak hours for the best experience and views. Boarding at Peradeniya (5 km from Kandy) is more practical and less constraining, with more frequent departures.
