History

Kegalle's historical significance stretches back to a prosperous civilization that flourished 28,000 years ago. Archaeological evidence abounds, including the discovery of numerous caves such as Beli Lena, Dorawaka Lena Halamada, and others.

Archaeological findings also demonstrate that Kegalle was part of Maya Rata, considered one of three major subdivisions of Sri Lanka. During British colonial rule, these three regions were designated as "Satara Koralaya," "Thun Koralaya," and "Patha Bulathgama."

Today

Beyond establishing itself as a welcoming city, Kegalle has also built a robust economy. The region thrives on substantial rubber, tea, and coconut production, complemented by cultivation of pepper, coffee, cacao, clove, and nutmeg classified as secondary crops. Currently, roughly 30% of land is dedicated to rubber plantations, with 11,000 hectares devoted to rice cultivation. Agricultural abundance results from consistent rainfall, which plays a vital role in ensuring quality harvests.

Mineral prospecting significantly contributes to Kegalle's economic prosperity. The Bogala mine, spanning approximately 1,693 km², holds major graphite deposits representing nearly half of the country's total mineral exports. Additionally, the district's prosperity is enhanced by gemstone trading along the Kelani River.

Pinnawala Elephant Sanctuary

This site functions simultaneously as an orphanage, nursery, and breeding center for rescued Asian wild elephants. The facility, located roughly ten kilometers northeast of the city, has earned its reputation for housing the world's largest number of captive pachyderms. If your stay is drawing to a close, don't leave Kegalle without visiting this remarkable destination.

Asupini Ella

Rising 30 meters high, these impressive waterfalls are part of the Maha River, which originates at both ends of the Raksawa mountain range. The falls are visible from the historic town of Arawanake. According to local legend, the name derives from an ancient tale where a king's wives threw themselves over the falls in despair. Literally, Asupini combines the words Aswaya meaning "horse" and Pini or Panina meaning "leap."

Temples and Sanctuaries

Kegalle takes pride in housing one of Sri Lanka's oldest Buddhist temples, the royal Wewaladeniya Viharaya, also known as Kegalla Siri Mahindodaya Piriwen Viharaya. You can admire its impressive gates alongside a botanical garden filled with lush vegetation.

Alagalla Mountain Range

Also called "the peak of liberty," this mountain chain earned its fame for hosting traditional climbing festivals. Each February 4th marks the celebration of Sri Lankan independence, commemorating the period of intense British oppression.

Climate

Kegalle experiences a tropical climate characterized by variable temperatures due to its location. The region receives substantial rainfall throughout the year, with drier conditions between December and April. Both summer and winter bring warm, sunny days with temperatures reaching up to 30°C.

Train travel represents the best transportation option to reach Kegalle. The journey takes less than two hours, with ticket prices ranging from 700 Rs to 950 Rs. Bus travel is also available, though journeys are longer than by train.

Taxi service is the most convenient and fastest way to navigate within the city.
