Located 4 km southeast of Weligama, Mirissa is a charming fishing village renowned for its magnificent beach. It's also the best place to observe whales, sea turtles, and the famous stilt fishermen.

Introduction to Mirissa Village

Mirissa is a small fishing village located on Sri Lanka's south coast. It's a popular beach destination, especially among surfers. Indeed, it's the ideal place to take up the sport, as despite shallow waters in certain areas, the ocean delivers excellent waves. Moreover, Mirissa remains relatively untouched by mass tourism, making it perfect for travelers on modest budgets. Here you'll find no sprawling resort complexes, just a handful of guesthouses and beachfront restaurants. Radiating warmth and energy, this quaint village enchants visitors with its undeniable charm.

Mirissa Beach

With its turquoise waters, golden sand and countless coconut palms, Mirissa Beach is a true haven of peace in a dreamlike setting. Stretching endlessly, it's ideal for numerous water and sports activities such as surfing or diving, as well as pure relaxation. Furthermore, if you're a food enthusiast, you'll find many stalls offering a wide variety of delicious fare. The most sought-after are oyster-based dishes (the region's signature product). Don't miss either the delicate pastries shaped like maple leaves, filled with red bean paste—truly a delight.

Beyond water sports, relaxation and local gastronomy, Mirissa Beach is also an excellent spot to watch whales in the distance between December and March. It also allows for witnessing sea turtle egg hatching. Another notable attraction at Mirissa is the famous stilt fishermen. Indeed, the Indian Ocean's powerful waves make traditional shoreline fishing impossible, so fishermen adapted their methods. They planted wooden poles upon which they perch, allowing them to fish roughly ten meters from shore.

Beware of scams, however. As stilt fishing has become a tourist draw, fake fishermen have begun standing on stilts to await tourists, asking for payment in exchange for photos. Fortunately, at Mirissa, the fishermen are still authentic. To find them, simply head to the beach and ask locals where the fishermen are stationed. They'll be delighted to point you in the right direction.

When to Visit?

The best time to visit Mirissa is during the dry season between December and March. Moreover, this period coincides with the passage of whales through the region.

By Bus:

From Colombo, direct buses to Mirissa are rare. Most buses only go as far as Matara. From Matara, take another bus to Mirissa.

By Train:

From Colombo railway station, take the train to Matara. Then, continue by bus, tuk-tuk, or taxi.
