Tangalle's Best Spots

Goyambokka:

Among Tangalle's finest beaches, Goyambokka commands first attention. This postcard-perfect cove is made for romantics and beach lovers alike. The sand is impossibly fine and bright white, lapped by turquoise waters on one side and bordered by lush coconut palms on the other. The sea here remains remarkably calm year-round, making it ideal for safe swimming. Surfers, however, will find their best conditions during July and August, when excellent swells roll in.

Marakolliya:

Located roughly 6 km north of Tangalle, Marakolliya beach ranks equally high among the region's standout shores. Its seemingly endless ribbon of sand backed by palm trees offers the perfect refuge to rest and soak up the sun after days of exploration. At Marakolliya, the waves run powerful—paradise for surfers. Swimming, however, is inadvisable; once darkness falls, you may witness an extraordinary spectacle as sea turtles emerge from the ocean to deposit their eggs in the sand. With luck, you might even catch hatchlings making their journey to the sea.

Rekawa:

Situated approximately 10 km east of Tangalle, Rekawa beach and its breathtaking setting is a must-see during your time in this region. Similar to Marakolliya yet less developed, here you'll find no restaurants or facilities—only palms, boundless sand, and the ocean. While strong waves make swimming challenging, the beach is perfectly suited for pure relaxation and beach time. It remains the finest vantage point for observing sea turtles in their natural habitat.

The Best Time to Visit Tangalle

While Tangalle welcomes visitors year-round, the ideal season to arrive is during the dry months, from December through March.

The simplest and fastest way to reach Tangalle from Colombo is by taxi. This option carries a price tag of around 100 € for a journey of approximately 3 hours 30 minutes.

For budget-conscious travellers, the train to Matara offers a viable alternative, with a journey time of about 3 hours. From Matara, you can then choose between a tuk-tuk or bus to complete your journey to Tangalle.
