Located on a peninsula on Sri Lanka's northeastern coast, 180 km from Kandy, Trincomalee is a destination for those seeking a getaway far removed from the beaten tourist path. Discovering Trincomalee's Beaches

The Trincomalee coastline is a succession of stunning beaches—some with white sand, others with golden—each more beautiful than the last. Among the most visited and sought-after are the Uppuveli and Nilaveli beaches.

Situated in the northern part of town, 6 km from the center, Uppuveli Beach ranks among Trincomalee's finest. Stretching for several kilometers, its crystalline waters and white sands, fringed by palm trees, lend themselves to countless activities—from leisurely sunbathing to swimming. It extends northward until it meets Nilaveli Beach, located 14 km from town. Celebrated for its golden sands, Nilaveli Beach is often favored over Uppuveli for the tranquility that permeates the place. Here, you truly feel as though you have the beach to yourself, though the two are quite similar aside from perhaps the coral presence and proximity to Pigeon Island. Yet whether at Uppuveli or Nilaveli, the beach's appeal is heightened by the presence of Sri Lankan fishermen, whose work at hauling in their nets provides a captivating spectacle.

A visit to Trincomalee would be incomplete without an excursion to Pigeon Island. Just 30 minutes by boat away, this reef is home to over 100 coral species and more than 300 fish species. Declared a marine sanctuary in 1963 and transformed into a national marine park in 2003, it has welcomed visitors since 2002, offering numerous recreational opportunities such as sea bathing, snorkeling on coral reefs, boat excursions, and bird watching.

The Best Time to Visit

The ideal period to make the most of the east coast runs from May to September. During these months, the east coast delivers a dreamlike experience through its turquoise waters, white sand, underwater exploration, and national marine park.

The simplest way to reach Trincomalee is to depart from Colombo on the overnight bus, which leaves at 22:30. For the return overnight journey to Colombo, departure is at 22:00. Once there, tuk-tuks are the most convenient and economical way to reach the beaches.
