Conquering Sri Lanka
Aéroport international de Bandaranaike → Dambulla
Upon arrival at Dambulla, we drop off our belongings at the hotel and set out to discover the Golden Temple of Dambulla.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the temple is renowned for its Buddhist caves perched at the top of a hill from which we can enjoy a very beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding area.
Its five caverns contain murals, stupas and Buddha statues.
Lion Rock and Ancient City of Polonnaruwa
At dawn, we undertake the climb and discovery of the "Lion Rock".
It is a huge block of stone topped with an old dilapidated castle in Sigirîya. From its height of 200 meters, the view of the surroundings is breathtaking.
Our English-speaking guide shows us the best spots on the site: natural caves, the frescos of the Maidens, the ruins of Kasyapa's palace and its bucolic gardens.
In the afternoon, we set off on an excursion to Polonnaruwa. It is in the heart of this ancient Sinhalese capital that we discover numerous historical remains.
Over an area of about ten km² stand ruins of palaces, temples and the Kalu Gal Vihara (4 statues of Buddha carved in granite).
If we wish, we can take a lovely romantic boat ride on the Parakrama Samudra Lake.
Spice Garden and Kandy
Today, we continue our romantic getaway towards the mountainous region.
Along the way, we can stop at the spice garden of Matale.
The visit allows us to discover several plants and spices and introduces us to their benefits, their harvesting process etc.
Our route continues towards the city of Kandy. The last monarchic capital of Sri Lanka, it is currently a sacred place for Buddhist pilgrims.
Visit of the famous Tooth Temple. This beautiful temple, a major pilgrimage site, is said to house a relic of one of Buddha's canines.
At the end of the day, we can witness the folk show of Kandyan Dance, traditional dances representing scenes of daily life (crop harvesting, fire dance, offerings…) Accompanied by singers and musicians, the dancers, dressed in ric, wear their colorful costumes.
Encounter with Pachyderms
The Sri Lanka peninsula stands out particularly for its generous nature. We can attest to this after visiting the Royal Botanic Garden of Peradeniya.
This charming corner spans 60 hectares and is bordered by the Mahaweli River. It is pleasant to stroll there for a few hours.
You find yourself immersed among the royal palms, the flower beds, the orchids, and the cannonball trees.
Next, we head to the "Millennium Elephant Foundation".
After lunch, we meet with the center's volunteers who accompany us for the elephant bathing.
We then set off for a walk at their side (elephant rides are not recommended out of respect for animal welfare).
Discovery of Nuwara Eliya
Our driver picks us up and we head towards Nuwara Eliya.
A small city perched high (at 1800 meters altitude) that boasts a very British charm with its Anglican church and its Georgian-style architecture houses.
Its mild and pleasant temperatures and its large parks promise a pleasant walk through the city.
We hit the road again and stop at the Seetha Amman Temple, visible from the road by its bright colors.
Tuk-tuk safari in the tea fields
The tuk-tuk will be our beneficial transport in the morning (approximately 4 hours). This small basic vehicle takes us through rice paddies, forests and tea fields. Along the way, our driver lets us enjoy the landscape with a few stops and some walking passages.
He then takes us to the small town of Haputale. It nestles in the heart of a magnificent mountain corridor. The things we can do there :
visit "Lipton's Seat", the place where a tea genius would recharge
roam between the tea plantations
understand the process of tea leaf maturation, accompanied by an assigned guide
meet the tea pickers
taste a good cup of this famous aromatic beverage
For the return, we have the option to walk back down or take a tuk tuk. A descent that marks the end of our atypical romantic safari.
Heading South
After breakfast, we head to the Dambatenne tea factory. A specialized guide will explain the entire manufacturing process to us. We conclude the visit with a tasting.
We then travel south. If we wish, we can enjoy a short walk at the Buduruvagala site where you can find Buddhas carved into the rock.
We visit the Kataragama temple, one of the main pilgrimage sites in the country. We take this opportunity to discover the sacred multi-religious city and its various sites, mosques, Buddhist and Hindu temples.
With a bit of luck, we may be able to attend a ceremony.
Safari in Yala Park and coastal discovery
Early in the morning, we set off on a jeep safari in the Yala National Park.
The territory of this park is immense, and is home to a wide variety of animals such as leopards, elephants, crocodiles, bears, mongooses, monkeys, spotted deer and birds in abundance. Safaris are a matter of luck but also of experience.
The spots where you are most likely to observe animals are often the water points, where they come to drink. Keep your eyes, ears and nose wide open!
We then take the road along the coast where we can see many hidden treasures such as the lighthouse of Dondra, the beautiful bays of Mirissa Beach and Weligama as well as the stilt fishermen of Ahangama.
We stop at Unawatuna Beachfor a first swim in the Indian Ocean before heading to our hotel in Galle.
Fort of Galle
Early in the morning, we head to the fort of Galle. Drawing its architecture from various colonial styles, the fort built in the 17th century is located in an isolated spot in the city.
With the appearance of a small town, it is a place where a calm and peaceful atmosphere prevails. We will walk around its ramparts, its lighthouse, one of its churches and its many souvenir shops.
We then take to the road along the west coast of the peninsula to reach Negombo.
Nicknamed the "Little Rome", this city is well known for its small villages, rustic markets, miles of golden beaches, its nature park and especially its water activities.
We let ourselves be taken in by the relaxed atmosphere of this beach resort, located just a stone's throw from the airport. We could, for example, unwind by strolling through its streets and admiring its magnificent setting.
We would pass by its colonial churches and its canal. We would also take a tour of its fish market.
Free time at the Maldives
Today, we are taking advantage of the idyllic setting of our hotel surrounded by lush vegetation and an incredible coral reef.
This free day allows us to relax as a couple.
Discovering the Maldives
Today, we set off to discover the paradisiacal beaches and the marine depths of the Maldives.
Scuba diving or snorkelling, your hotel will take care of organizing your day programme at sea.

We return to Malé by speed boat before boarding our return flight.

The information below concerns travelers from the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland and Canada traveling to Sri Lanka for a tourist stay. Entry rules may change, so we recommend verifying this information with the official authorities before your departure.
Passport
To enter Sri Lanka, your passport must be valid for at least six months after your entry date into the country and contain at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.
The document must be in good condition (no damaged, torn or altered pages).
Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)
Nationals of the European Economic Area, Switzerland and Canada must obtain a Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA – Electronic Travel Authorization) before arriving in Sri Lanka. There is no visa exemption on arrival for a tourist stay.
The ETA can be obtained online via the official Sri Lankan government portal and allows a tourist stay of up to 30 days, with the possibility of extending your stay in the country up to a maximum of 90 days with the Sri Lankan Immigration Department.
Authorities may also request:
an exit ticket from the territory (return or onward flight),
proof of sufficient financial resources for the duration of your stay,
a confirmation of accommodation reservation.
Sri Lanka Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)
Before your arrival, you must obtain a Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), issued by Sri Lankan authorities.
This electronic visa must be requested online on the official Sri Lankan government website. Required information includes:
passport information
flight and itinerary details
address of your first accommodation in Sri Lanka
personal information and contact details
The ETA is generally issued within a few hours to a few days. It is recommended to submit your application at least 48 hours before departure. The digital confirmation must be presented to immigration on arrival.
Health and Vaccinations
No vaccine is mandatory to enter Sri Lanka from the EEA, Switzerland or Canada. However, certain vaccinations are recommended by health authorities, particularly against:
hepatitis A and hepatitis B,
typhoid,
rabies (in case of risk activities or extended stay in rural areas).
Precautions against malaria and dengue may be recommended depending on the regions you visit. Consult a doctor or an international vaccination center before your departure.
Traveling with Children
Minors must have their own valid passport covering the duration of the stay and their own ETA.
In certain European countries, when a minor travels without one of their parents, a territorial exit authorization may be required according to the regulations of their country of residence.
Other Nationalities
Entry conditions may vary depending on nationality. Travelers concerned should check with the Sri Lankan embassy or consulate in their country of residence.
